Why I attend The Business Show – and think you should too

Over the weekend I got talking to Brad Burton. We had both been speaking at The Business Show at Olympia at the end of last week, and I was saying this had been by far my most productive show ever. In context, this was the 19th time I’ve attended The Business Show, first as an attendee, then an exhibitor, and these days a speaker.

Brad pointed out that I hadn’t been sure about attending this time, and right up to the last minute planned to only do my speaking slot and not hang around for any of the social element. Instead, I chose to stay for the two days.

Here’s the real benefit I get from the show, over and above any benefit I get from speaking there and selling a load of books.

The opportunity to catch up with the other exhibitors and attendees there is immense. The opportunity to have 121s with people, who have come together for the same reason, and move those relationships forward, is immense. The opportunity to connect with people at scale over two days is immense.

The organisers of The Business Show go to all the trouble of getting 25,000 people through the door. Some of those 25,000 people I’ve now ‘known’ for nine years, even if I only see them at the show twice a year. But the organisers have sorted out the audience, all I need to do is turn up and connect with them.

Some of the people I was meeting already feel as though they ‘know’ me, from social media. But this was our chance to actually chat, and take the relationship forward with a real life face to face meeting. Some of the people I meet very irregularly but have been on my list of “must catch up with…..” and now we have. And some of the people have actual business they want to do with me, and were reminded to take that forward just by virtue of bumping into me at the show “Stef, I’ve been meaning to ‘phone you, have you got five minutes now”.

The reason that so many of us take advantage of the various social media platforms is because the creators of those platforms give us a ready made audience online.

The reason that I continue to attend The Business Show, and have got 2017’s dates in my diary already, is that the organisers have given me (and you) a ready made audience. All you have to do is turn up and engage with that audience.
