Networking lessons from Gary Vaynerchuk at #Vaynerworld
Most of what Gary talked about was social media related but it surprises me that more people don’t make the link between networking online and networking in the real world – the type of business networking that I do rather a lot of.
For me, social media offers the most incredible opportunity to join up my networking, to keep in touch with my contacts in a way that has never been possible before and to “get to know” people before I ever meet them. It is a shame that so many people still use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn just to broadcast and just to sell in a way that they simply wouldn’t do in real life.
I wrote down a load of Gary’s comments during the event and one of the comments which really resonated with me was that “The people who think you can automate human touch are wrong”. For most businesses, particularly in the Business-to-Business sector you DO need to go out there and meet people, you do need to follow up those relationships in real life or on the ‘phone. The benefits of being out there and meeting people are huge in any business sector, not just for sales but for finding expertise to allow your business to grow and develop.
Another comment that Gary made was that you can use social media to become the “authority of content” – making sure that you talk about your business SO much so that you can’t be ignored, that you generate the conversation about your business sector, that you establish yourself as the authority and learn from others as you go. The opportunity to present and talk about your business at business networking events gives you that opportunity in real life too – by taking up the 10 minute speaker slot wherever you can and making sure that people can see that you know your stuff. You can sell without selling by demonstrating just how knowledgeable you are on your subject and giving loads of advice and information away for free. Ideally you should join the two up, speaking at business networking events as well as publishing content on the internet and social media. A bit like I am doing.
The line between social media and business networking is a very fine one and the people who join it up, taking the time to learn to use both in a way that works are the people who will truly benefit from the massive opportunities out there.
