lots of little things > one big thing every time
One of the biggest challenges I face in training in people around networking and social media is convincing them that it isn’t about one piece of perfect content, one networking event, the perfect 60 second pitch, one beautifully crafted article or video.
So much of what I have done is imperfect at best. It is about the cumulative effect of doing lots of little things. Some of which will land and have a direct ROI and many of which won’t.
An unfortunate truth is that the article you spend hours creating and get your mates to proof read will get 7 views, whilst the one you rushed out when late for an appointment will go viral. The video you got dressed up for and did your hair specially will be watched by you and your Mum, the one you did unscripted and with the wrong shirt on gets over 1000 views.
None of this stuff can be truly planned, any more than clinically choosing which networking event to go to will be successful.
Those of us who have become well known have done lots of little things, consistently. And those little things have spanned networking, social media, content marketing, traditional marketing, PR, good old fashioned sales and other disciplines too.
Don’t get so hung up on the one perfect piece of content, the one ideal networking event, that it holds you back from doing other imperfect stuff. Keep moving, keep visible, keep building your confidence in networking and social. Work on the perfect stuff whilst you bung the imperfect stuff out there.
But don’t spend so long in production that people forget you exist.
Lots of little things > one big thing every time.
