If you want 2016 to be awesome you need to understand this first

2016 New Year message

My Facebook timeline, and yours, is filled this morning with posts about how 2016 is going to be brilliant, how 2015 was really challenging but 2016 is going to be SO different and how massive financial success, weight loss and general happiness is going the be the order of the day for the next twelve months.

If you really want 2016 to be awesome you need to understand this.

It already is.

And so was 2015.

If you’re reading this, you made it through 2015. Lots of people didn’t.

If you’re reading this, you have access to the internet, where you can find the entirety of the human races’ knowledge, be entertained, connect with anyone in the world, simply and cheaply and loads more. How awesome is that already.

You see, if you want 2016 to be awesome, you have to embrace the other stuff, the challenges, the disappointments, the stuff which feels like it gets in the way and slows you down. And the stuff which is just sad, because that’s going to happen too.

If you’ve chosen the entrepreneurial route, you are going to have to embrace the disappointments as well as the successes, the stuff which works as well as the stuff which doesn’t, the people who do what they say they’re going to, along with the people who don’t. Because that’s just how it is and it’s what we all signed up for.

If you’re into networking, as I am, some meetings will pay off and you’ll make sales, some others will be a bit “meh” and you’ll wonder why you bothered getting up at 5am (but someone you met at that meeting will ‘phone you in three years time when they’re ready to do business with you, you just don’t know that yet).

In order for 2016 to be awesome you need to make it so. Making wishes and resolutions today is great, putting stuff out there for the universe to deliver to you is fantastic, but you need to meet the universe halfway and actually put the effort in to move towards what you want.

And you’ll get some of what you want this year, and you’ll also get some of what you didn’t want. That’s what life is about, embrace it and enjoy it.

2015 for me was a massive rollercoaster of stuff which was brilliant, stuff which wasn’t so good; decisions which turned out to be absolutely right, and decisions which I look back at and simply hold my head in my hands; business ideas which just worked, and business ideas which needed a shit load more work than I imagined they would.

Most of all, 2015 was an education, with some lessons I really wanted, and some other lessons which I could have put off for the rest of my life, but it turns out I needed them, even if I didn’t want them.

Embrace 2016 and all that it will offer you – good and bad. Look out of the window and realise how awesome life already is. Look at your business and your life and acknowledge the huge opportunities it offers to you, right now, today. Connect with people JUST FOR THE SAKE OF CONNECTING with them.

Set your expectations not based on what the universe is going to give to you, or that life is going to be magically “better” than last year, because some of it will be, and some of it won’t. Set your expectations based on how you’re going to attack it, and who you’re going to be at the end of the year. And make a resolution to realise how brilliant it already is, and to be grateful for what you already have, rather than focussing on what you don’t have. And don’t make that resolution just today. Make it every single day of the year.

In 365 days time, look back and be so proud of what you achieved, and realise that the other stuff is life too, and you’re privileged to have another day on this planet.

Happy New Year 🙂
